The Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA acknowledges and honors the Lenni-Lenape, Munsee-Lenape, and Susquehannock Peoples who were forcibly removed from this area, and upon whose ancestral homelands we gather. With gratitude to God, we honor the land itself, as well as all our Indigenous siblings who have and who continue to care for this land and call it their home.

  • Helping every congregation to understand and embrace their situation and their purpose so that they can live well and serve well and be better ready when the time comes to end well – leaving a lasting, faithful, purposeful legacy.

GOING BEYOND DEATH TO LIFE

SYNOD VALUES

Love White

LOVE like Jesus

God's love extends unconditionally to all creation, enabling us to love God and others. Jesus, embodying this love, calls us to love God and our neighbors as the greatest commandments (Mark 12:28-31). This understanding empowers us to engage compassionately with others.

Heal White

HEAL like Jesus

We all need healing, with God as our great healer. Jesus showed that being human involves being wounded, but through God's love, we can live without letting our wounds harm others. By recognizing our brokenness and seeking healing, we can support others with grace, forgiveness, and compassion. Healing is crucial in ministry, and we can trust God’s promise to be with us and tend to us.

Engage White

ENGAGE like Jesus

Engagement, which involves occupying the attention or efforts of another, helps us build deeper relationships within our churches and community. It allows us to understand and respond to those who are hurting, participate in God's work, and respond to the Spirit's call. To engage effectively, we must remain rooted in God's love, tend to our wounds, and use contemplative practices to notice God's movement and the Spirit's guidance.

Black History Month: Week 4

Racial Justice is Something I Didn’t Sign Up For! “Pastor, it’s a shame that we have school districts that have so many minorities.” This was one of the most heartbreaking comments I’ve ever heard. I serve in Schuylkill County, which is at the last census 90.7% white in its population and 3.8% black, and also 3.3% Hispanic. Yes, I am aware that this adds up to 97.8, and the rest of that is designated as “other”. That comment that you read above? It came not from any parishioner I’ve had, but from someone who attended a funeral that I had led.

Black History Month: Week 3

Racial Justice Work is God’s Work, Our Hands “Why should I care about all this racial justice stuff?” “The church should stick to spiritual matters, not get involved in politics!” I sometimes hear these arguments. And I get it. There was a time when I didn’t see how my call to be a pastor included a call to work for justice. I thought these were two separate things – both good things, to be sure – but not necessarily related. Was I ever wrong!

Black History Month: Week 2

Racial Justice Work Where does one begin? That’s a great question! If you are asking, then you are already on the right track. When I first came to the realization that I needed to learn and understand more about my whiteness and the experience of black and brown people, I started with John Lewis’ Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change and Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy and Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give.
