Boyertown Churches Team Up to Plant Hope – One Potato at a Time

Written by: Shannon Omlor of St John's Boyertown
On Saturday, April 26, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Boyertown was buzzing with energy and purpose. Members from both congregations came together for a hands-on mission: slicing up 5,000 pounds of seed potatoes for IHartHarvest—also known as The Potato Project.
This heart-driven nonprofit, based in Berks County, is on a mission to grow fresh produce for local families in need. All crops are donated to Helping Harvest Food Bank, which serves Berks, Schuylkill, and parts of northern Montgomery Counties.
For 10 years, St. John’s has stood behind The Potato Project—offering both volunteer support and financial backing. Now, entering its 16th growing season, IHartHarvest continues to rely entirely on volunteers to get the job done—from prepping the seed potatoes in spring to digging up the harvest in fall.
The past two years have seen Good Shepherd UCC join in the effort, turning the shared church parking lot (or basement on a rainy day!) into a joyful assembly line of faith and fellowship. Together, volunteers prepared 100 bags of seed potatoes, which will soon be planted. If all goes as expected, those 5,000 pounds will yield a whopping 35,000 pounds of fresh potatoes—every bit of it donated to families in need.

And the work doesn’t stop there. Come September, St. John’s members will head out to the fields to help bring in the harvest—and everyone is welcome to lend a hand. Details and volunteer registration can be found on the St. John’s website this fall.
At St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, we believe God is working in powerful ways in our lives and in our community. We're committed to creating totally devoted disciples of Jesus Christ through prayer, bible study, and holy conversation. Above all, we strive to love God and love all people—one potato, one act of service, one life at a time.
