A Table of Love and Accessibility at Jerusalem

Event details submitted by Pastor Larry Laine of Jerusalem Lutheran in Trachsville
At Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Trachsville, a heartfelt need sparked a beautiful outpouring of love and generosity. When a young couple, longtime members of the congregation who both live with disabilities, needed significant home modifications to make their bathroom accessible, the church community didn’t hesitate to act.
The request first came before the church council and was quickly passed along to the Social Ministry and Fellowship Committee. The couple’s small home lacked the necessary accommodations for wheelchair access, and updating the bathroom, specifically enlarging the shower and making the sink wheelchair-accessible, was a crucial next step in supporting their daily living.
The response from the congregation was swift and Spirit-filled. The Fellowship Committee organized a turkey dinner and bake sale, an event that brought together the gifts of many hands and hearts. Held in the church’s fellowship hall, the dinner drew a joyful crowd from both within the church and the surrounding community. Whether they came to sit and eat or simply picked up a takeout meal, everyone contributed to a cause rooted in care and compassion.
In the kitchen, as volunteers roasted turkeys, prepared gravy, and peeled potatoes, laughter and conversation filled the air. Church members swapped stories, discussed current happenings in the congregation, and kept the purpose of the event, supporting the couple, at the center of their work.
The evening raised nearly $7,500 toward the accessibility renovations, a resounding success that exceeded expectations. But beyond the funds, the dinner revealed something deeper: the living presence of God in the joyful service of others. The smiles on the faces of those preparing and serving the meal, the warmth shared around tables, and the shared sense of purpose all echoed the ministry of Jesus, who fed, gathered, and dwelled among the people in love.
This experience deepened the congregation’s sense of mission. As Pastor Laine reflected, “The congregation is looking for ways to reach out and engage the community.” This event was a powerful step in that direction, one that embodied healing, dignity, and care for neighbors in need. It wasn’t just a meal. It was an act of grace made visible.
