Sewing Group Spreads Warmth to the Community and Beyond
Written by: Debbie Geiger, St John's Lutheran, Slatington
Our sewing group was formed in the late 1980’s and was originally called the Dorcas Circle. The ladies sewed quilts and lap robes for Lutheran World Relief and the area’s annual Ingathering in December.
Overtime we just became known as the Sewing Group, but our mission remains the same. We meet two Friday mornings a month to create quilts and lap robes to distribute to organizations in need. Some of our sewers take projects home to work on when they have extra time at home.
On Sunday, November 24th, Pastor Halle Kluever blessed our quits and lap robes during our Sunday Services to prepare them for distribution. We made 4 quilts for Lutheran World Relief. We also made 147 lap robes.
On Thursday, December 5th, we gathered with the other Lutheran Churches in our area at the Northern Lehigh Valley Mission District Ingathering. Every year we gather at the Union Lutheran Church in Schnecksville to provide items needed by various organizations in our area. Each organization provides a list of items needed to help individuals in their group. In addition to all the items the members of our congregation donated to these groups, our Sewing Group sends lap robes. The organizations that received our lap robes were Gracedale Nursing Home, Kids Peace, Sayre Center and the Ripple Center. These organizations provide services to the elderly and children. We hope these lap robes provide warmth, but more importantly a personal item that the individual can call their own. They know someone made it as a special gift to them.
In addition, we also donate to the Lutheran Home of Topton. We also give a lap robe to any individual in our congregation that has been added to our “Thinking of You” group at Christmas. We want them to know that even though they are unable to attend church regularly, they are in our thoughts and prayers.
It warms our hearts to know we are able to reach out into the community to help others with the colorful quilts we create. We hope our items bring joy to those who receive them.
