From Generosity to Action: Assembling 90 Disaster Hygiene Kits

On February 19, 2025, members of Advent and Bern Lutheran Churches in the West Berks Mission District came together for a hands-on mission project in support of Lutheran Disaster Response. Hosted at Advent Lutheran Church, the event brought together a dedicated team of volunteers who assembled 90 Disaster Hygiene Kits—far surpassing the original goal of 40. This effort was made possible through the generosity of donated materials and the support of Thrivent, whose Action Team sponsorship helped bring the project to life.
At precisely 2 PM, ten members of Advent got to work, moving swiftly through a well-planned assembly line designed by Dale Kratzer, the event lead. In just 30 minutes, all 90 kits were packed and ready—an impressive feat of coordination and teamwork. The careful preparation of the day before, combined with the spirit of collaboration, made the process smooth and efficient.
This gathering was more than an act of service; it was a tangible expression of God’s love and compassion. Through their generosity and efficiency, volunteers demonstrated what it means to love, heal, and engage like Jesus. The concern for those affected by disasters was evident—not just in the willingness to serve, but in the careful planning and provision of essential hygiene materials for those in crisis.
Perhaps the most powerful moment came in recognizing the true impact of this work. These kits will go to individuals and families recovering from floods, fires, and severe weather—people facing loss and uncertainty. In following Jesus’ teaching of the Golden Rule, this effort was a reminder that small acts of kindness can bring comfort and hope to those in need.
For the volunteers, this project made faith real—transforming belief into action in a way that not only strengthened their own faith, but will also provide relief to those who receive the kits. In just a short time, a simple act of service became a powerful witness to God’s call to care for our neighbors.
