Did you know hat children from around the synod can experience a Bear Creek Camp summer program without going to the Camp because your congregation gives to Mission Support?
Bear Creek Camp conducts day camps in Lutheran congregations throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. What makes the Wilkes-Barre Cooperative Bear Creek Day Camp unique is besides children attending from the participating downtown Wilkes-Barre Lutheran parishes, children are intentionally invited who are part of Mercy Services, a program for children at risk which is directed by Sister Lucille Brislin. Mercy Services is housed in the St. John’s Parish House which adjoins St. John’s Lutheran Church where the Bear Creek Day Camp is held. Thanks to a grant provided by the Witness and Service Team of the NEPA Synod of the ELCA, which is funded by Mission Support Giving, over half of the children who attend the Wilkes-Barre Cooperative Bear Creek Day Camp come from Mercy Services. These children are truly diamonds in the rough in that they have all the potential of other children but next to none of the opportunities. And, without fail, every year as the result of singing, laughing, playing and praying together, these children begin to shine with God’s love as the result of being nurtured in the faith based outdoor ministry of the Bear Creek Day Camp.
