With the election of a new bishop coming up in 2020, the synod needs to begin a time of serious discernment. But no one said serious contemplation need be without some serious fulfillment of the sweet tooth. In the spirit of the State of Pennsylvania’s Ice Cream Tour, the Bishop and Synod Vice President Kristen Edelman-Weiner bring you… The Synod (End of) Summer Ice Cream Tour!
Why an ice cream tour?
The tour is born from a desire to reach out across the area in some new and engaging ways in order to spark discussions about the future of the church, our Synod, and our identity and missional direction into the future. We are the church TOGETHER, and in such an important year as this, we must start conversations early to allow time for participation and meaningful, personal discussion and feedback around these topics. The MISSION involves everyone, and I am on a quest to engage as many as possible.
What’s the tour schedule?
The bishop and I selected some regionally famous / popular ice cream stops that we felt were as central as possible to as many of our churches as possible. We had some great suggestions for stops throughout our synodical area; however, we also faced some time limitations given our calendars — you will surely notice the final two stops are technically in autumn. 🙂 I’ve copied the schedule into the email below.
What will happen at each stop?
In addition to the fun and fellowship that is sharing ice cream together, there will be likely be a moment or three for the Bishop to share a few words, and I will be setting up an area where those who gather can share their thoughts via written word and interactive question stations (low tech – think post-its and display boards, no need to download apps!) *If you have a question you’d like to post to those who gather, please feel free to send it to me!* Please note that ice cream / food purchases are up to the individuals attending, and no purchases are necessary to come and participate! Also, you do not need to arrive exactly at the starting time, nor is anyone obligated to stay the 2 hours we will be there. All are encouraged to come and go as they wish.
After we have completed the tour, the Bishop and I will compile and share what we have learned with you. It is our hope that what we learn will be helpful guidance for us as a Synod and for our Synodical leaders in many ways, including and especially our discernment of our next Bishop and the future of the NEPA Synod.
