Erma Gajewski. a member of New Jerusalem, New Jerusalem wanted to start an American Cancer Society Relay for Life team as part of the Kutztown Relay. A good friend of hers with cancer was receiving experimental drugs which saved her life, and Erma wanted to do all she could to help raise funds for research for the ACS. A team participated in the Kutztown Relay for the first time in 2006.
That same year another member Faye Dey was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2008 her husband along with the support of friends committed to having a car cruise, and the charity they chose to support was the American Cancer Society. They asked the New Jerusalem Relay for Life Team if they would be willing to work the food stand; and other members of the congregation volunteered to bake cakes and pies, donate beverages, and help where needed.
Street rods, muscle cars, customs, antiques, classics, and trucks all are invited to participate. In addition to the food sales, a DJ spins a variety of music. There also is a raffle of items handcrafted by the congregation and friends, and donated by local merchants; and there is a 50/50 drawing. An admission donation is requested both from spectators and from the owners of the show cars.
In 2008 75 show cars participated and raised a net profit of $3220. The best year was 2013 when there were 250 cars and also perfect weather. The net profit that year was $11,205. In the past seven years the New Jerusalem Relay for Life Team has raised a total of $53,112 for ACS through Cruise for a Cure.
